What others are saying...

I embarked on teacher training at Big River Yoga because I wanted to bring knowledge and discipline to my personal practice. Chris Gordon and Maria Toso bring unusual insight to the classes they teach and I wanted to drink from the same well. I was not disappointed! Not only did I deepen my familiarity with the asanas, but I was also introduced to the philosophical foundations of the practice that make it so much more than just exercise. I can truly say it has awakened my awareness to a spiritual dimension of life.     -Diana

I didn't enroll in this training to become a yoga teacher - so I am amazed at how learning to teach has deepened my practice, both on and off the mat. Yoga is SO much more than asana!! I learned more than I thought I could about the body practices, but I also learned to listen for the harmonies of effortlessness and ease. What a gift to bring to life!!   - Marga

Do you yearn to go deeper, integrate your intentions from your practice into everyday life and cultivate the skills to teach the healing art of yoga to others? In this program you will:

  • Develop a consistent yoga and meditation practice.
  • Identify your intentions then cultivate the daily habits to reach your goals with the support of a health coach.
  • Gain wisdom and study yoga history and philosophy to apply them to your life.
  • Learn about Ayurveda to cultivate self-awareness, health and bring bring balance.
  • Learn and practice the methodology including alignment principles, demonstrations and adjustments to teach yoga safely and effectively.
  • Learn by experience and step into the seat of teacher as you practice teaching in a safe and reflective environment.
  • Acquire business skills to help you start teaching and grow your classes.

Chris and Big River Yoga staff provide an all-encompassing approach to really learning the traditions of yoga in a way that is easily applicable to all areas of life. I enrolled in the Yoga for Conscious Living teacher training with a small, clear-cut intention of learning how to teach yoga to others, unaware of the total life transformation I was about to experience. I graduated the program with so much more than knowledge of the physical practice, including: improved self-acceptance, contentment and ease in daily living.                               -Jessica

I learned how to teach, which is exciting. But most exciting is that the process as a whole was transformative, and the teachers, the student group, the readings and the intensive practice made it so. Now I see that yoga done well has the power to make us more deeply human.                                             -Steve

Curriculum

Develop your personal practice.
Your yoga practice is essential to this process. Maintain consistency to support your well-being. The asana portion of the training is based on five categories of asana: standing poses, seated postures, backbends, twists and inversions. Examine the alignment within the various postures using an anatomical and bio-mechanical lens. We will explore both static and dynamic ways to practice asana. Pranayama and meditation are integral components of our study and practice.

Integrate your intentions for study, practice and a yogic life. You will work with our Health Coach, Nora Gordon, to identify your intentions, set goals unique to your needs and interests, and dive into the process of self-inquiry and transformation by designing daily rhythms that support your health, wellness and intentions.

Dive into the history and philosophy of yoga. Through these seminal texts we will gain access to tools of self discovery and a path towards happiness. Read and discuss the Bhagavad Gita, the yoga sutras of Patanjali, and learn about Tantric philosophy. Bring yoga to life with Ayurveda and nutrition and live in connection to the seasons. Learn how the chakras and koshas pertain to your daily life.

Learn anatomy specifically geared for yoga teachers. Includes muscle and bones, joint mobility, indications and contra-indications for various health conditions, pregnancy and stages of life.

Learn basic adaptive techniques to work with the needs of specific populations including chair and elder yoga, pre-natal and injury-specific conditions.

Learn how to lead restorative yoga postures for rest and relaxation of your students as well as your own personal self-care.

Discover communication tools and techniques to effectively tap into your heart and connect with others while teaching and during all of your exchanges. See how this process deepens your compassion for all beings. We will touch upon the teachings of non-violent communication.

Using a hands-on learning mentorship model, participants will have the opportunity to practice teaching in small groups with the guidance and support of your teacher.
